ALRESFORD DISPLAYED

In 1991 we were delighted when the Winchester Museums Service, represented by the Hyde Historic Resources Centre, proposed to mount an Exhibition In the Alresford Community Centre of photographs, water colours, paintings and other exhibits which would portray the past and present of Alresford and its Deanery. They knew, of course, that 1991 was the twenty fifth anniversary of the founding of the Alresford Historical and Literary Society and so the chosen date would be particularly appreciated. As a further bonus the name chosen for the inhibition was ALRESFORD DISPLAYED, which rather pleased your working party.

Miss Elizabeth R. Lewis, B.A, F.M.A., the Winchester Museums Curator was in overall charge of the arrangements for the Exhibition which took place over the weekend of June 14th to June 17th. In addition to the items provided by her the Society displayed the Domesday panels of the history of Alresford jointly owned with the New Alresford. Town Trust.

Mr David Chidgey, then Alresford's City Councillor, opened the Exhibition and praised Miss Lewis for her superb organisation and selection of exhibits and also thanked the many members of the Society who helped in so many ways as Stewards, Scene Shifters, and other work.

Miss Lewis said that the response to the project would determine whether the City Council would take similar exhibitions to other rural areas .

A rough count by the Stewards, indicated that over one thousand visitors passed throughout the Exhibition over the weekend. Generally the whole event seems to have been a resounding success.
